Office Opening in Nelson, BC

Location: Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery, Nelson, BC.
Sinixt Confederacy Members involved: Elder Rick Desautel, Chief of the Sinixt Confederacy

The Sinixt Confederacy inaugurated their Fish & Wildlife office in Nelson, BC, marking a significant step in re-establishing their presence in their traditional territory.

The event was highlighted by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing between the Sinixt Confederacy and the Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery. This agreement focuses on the care, preservation, and display of Sinixt artifacts, which are crucial for maintaining the culture and history of the Sinixt people. The office opening is a symbolic and practical effort to strengthen the Confederacy’s relationship with local institutions and further their rights and recognition within their ancestral lands.

The office opening aligns with the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision in R v. Desautel, affirming the Sinixt as an Aboriginal People of Canada. More here.
